Do you work on Macs?
Macs are a normal part of what we see, both in offices and through Advanced Computer Consulting, our consumer repair side.
What we do: setup and migration from an old machine, recovering data, diagnosing a Mac that will not boot, removing adware and the fake support pop-ups Mac users are increasingly targeted with, storage upgrades where the model allows it, sorting out an iCloud or Apple account mess, and getting a Mac working properly alongside Windows machines and a Microsoft 365 environment in an office.
Where we will send you elsewhere: screen replacement and board level repair on recent models. Apple has made these progressively harder to service independently, parts are tied to the machine and require Apple's tooling to pair, and an authorized provider will do it properly and keep your warranty intact. We would rather tell you that in the first two minutes than after we have your machine in pieces.
Two Mac specific things worth knowing:
- Storage is usually not upgradeable on newer machines. It is soldered to the board. So the configuration you buy is the configuration you keep, which makes the decision at purchase time matter more than it used to. Ask us before you buy rather than after you run out of space.
- Macs do get malware. Less traditional viruses and far more adware, browser hijacks, and those full screen warnings claiming your Mac is infected with a phone number to call. That last one is a scam, every time, and there is an article about it next to this one.
In a business setting, a mixed Mac and Windows office is completely workable and we support plenty of them. Worth saying that Macs still need management, backup and multi-factor authentication like any other computer. The idea that a Mac does not need looking after is the reason the ones we see are often in worse shape than the Windows machines.
