Can you help when we open a second location?

Second locations go badly for one reason almost every time: the internet was ordered too late. A business circuit can take four to eight weeks to install, longer if construction is involved, and no amount of urgency changes that. Everything else can be done quickly. That cannot.

So the first call, as soon as you have signed a lease or are close to it, should be about connectivity. We will tell you what is actually available at that address, which is often different from what the sales map claims, and get it ordered.

After that, the decisions worth making deliberately:

• How the two sites share files. If your files are already in Microsoft 365 or Google, this is solved and the second site is just another internet connection. If they are on a server at the first location, you are choosing between a site to site connection, which works and adds a dependency, and moving the files to the cloud, which is usually the better answer and is a project rather than a task.
• Phones. A hosted phone system makes a second location trivial: extensions, transfers and a shared directory work the same as down the hall. A traditional system at site one usually does not extend gracefully, and a second location is a common and sensible moment to replace it.
• Who supports the new site when nobody technical is there. The first location usually has somebody who can at least restart things. The second one often does not, for a while.
• Cabling and Wi-Fi before the furniture arrives. Running cable in an empty space is quick and cheap. Running it around desks and people is neither.
