Small business IT basics

Do you have a minimum number of users?

Short answerNo hard minimum. Below about five people a monthly agreement often does not pay for itself, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one.

We do not have a rule that says we will not talk to you under a certain headcount. What we have is an honest view of where a monthly agreement starts making sense.

Under about five people, a full managed agreement is usually more than you need. The math is simple: at that size you generate few enough issues that hourly support plus a small set of essentials often costs less over a year. What we would set you up with instead is the security basics done properly, which is multi-factor authentication, backup, a password manager, and email protection, and then hourly help when something breaks. That is a real service and we sell it.

Between about five and fifteen, it depends less on headcount and more on what you do. A five person title company has more at stake in an hour of downtime than a fifteen person business that could work on paper for a day. If losing access to your systems stops revenue, the agreement is worth it earlier.

Above fifteen or so, an agreement is nearly always the better deal, because at that point the informal arrangement where one person handles IT alongside their real job has already broken down. You just may not have admitted it yet.

The question we would actually ask in place of headcount: how many hours a month is someone in your office spending on computer problems, and what is that person's time worth. That number tends to make the decision for you, and it is frequently larger than anyone expects.
