The questions people hesitate to ask
I set a lot of this up myself. Are you going to rip it out and start over?
Short answerNo. We keep what works, and when something does have to change you get the reason and the cost first.
Owner-built setups are often more sensible than people expect, because the person who built it actually understood the business. What they usually lack is documentation, patching discipline, and a backup somebody has tested. All three are fixable without replacing anything.
We do replace things that cannot be secured, cannot be supported, or are visibly heading for failure. When that happens you get the reason in plain language and the cost before anything moves. "We are more comfortable with our own brand" is not a reason, and we will not present it as one.
The one thing we do insist on is our monitoring and management tools on the machines, because we cannot be accountable for equipment we cannot see.
