Computers and everyday problems

Why won't my printer print?

Short answerUsually the queue, the connection, or the wrong printer selected. Three things to try before you call.
  • Check which printer is selected. Windows changes the default on its own, particularly after an update. Look at what is actually highlighted in the print dialog rather than assuming.
  • Clear the queue. One stuck job blocks everything behind it. Open the printer from the taskbar, cancel all documents, then send a single test page.
  • Power cycle the printer, not the computer. Off, thirty seconds, back on. Network printers lose their address more often than anyone admits.

One thing worth working out before you call: does it fail from every computer, or just one? If one computer cannot print and others can, the problem is that computer. If nobody can print, it is the printer or the network. Saying which saves us a step.
