What do I do when the internet goes out at the office?
Short answerCheck whether it is everyone or one person, power cycle in the right order, then call us rather than the provider.
Three steps, in order:
- Establish the scope. Is it everybody, or one person? One person is a device or cable problem. Everybody is the circuit, the firewall, or the switch. Check whether phones are down too if they run over the internet, because that tells us a lot.
- Power cycle in order and wait. Modem or ONT first. Wait two full minutes, which feels far longer than it sounds, then the firewall, then the switch. Doing it in the wrong order or too fast is why this often does not work when people try it.
- Look for lights. If the modem never gets a solid connection light, the circuit is down and no amount of restarting anything inside your building will fix it.
Then call us rather than the provider. We can confirm whether it is truly the circuit before you spend forty minutes in a phone queue, and if it is, we deal with them on your behalf. Managed clients also have monitoring that usually tells us before anyone picks up the phone.
If your business genuinely cannot lose a day, ask us about a cellular failover connection. It is not expensive and it turns an outage into an inconvenience.
