How do I move email off GoDaddy, an old host, or a personal Gmail?

Short answerIt is a standard migration. The complication is usually who controls the domain, not the mail itself.

Moving from a basic email host, a web host's bundled mail, or staff using personal Gmail accounts for work is one of the most common jobs we do, and it is a genuine upgrade rather than a lateral move.

What makes it awkward is rarely technical:

  • Domain control. Your domain is frequently registered to whoever built your website years ago, sometimes to a former employee, occasionally to a company that no longer exists. Establishing control is step one and can take longer than the migration.
  • Personal accounts holding business mail. If staff have been using their own Gmail for work, that mail legally sits in their personal account. Moving it requires their cooperation, which is straightforward now and impossible after a bad exit.
  • Whatever else is on the old host. Old hosting often bundles mail with the website and sometimes a database. Cancelling the mail can take the website with it if nobody checks first.

The mail migration itself is routine. We copy it across, cut over in the evening, and reconnect everyone's devices the following morning.
