The questions people hesitate to ask
Who do we call for website help?
Worth separating three things that people reasonably assume are one thing:
- Your domain name. Ours, in the sense that we make sure you own it, it is renewed, and the records pointing your mail and site in the right direction are correct. This is where outages come from, and it matters more than people realize.
- Your email. Entirely ours.
- Your website design, content and hosting. Not ours. We do not build or design websites and we are not going to pretend otherwise to keep the work.
Where we do get involved on the website side: when the site goes down and the question is whether it is the host or the domain, when a site change breaks email because somebody edited DNS records carelessly, which happens more than you would think, and when a site has been compromised and needs securing.
We work alongside plenty of web designers and we are happy to recommend one. Tell us what you need the site to do and we will point you at someone who fits.
One thing we would push on regardless: make sure your business owns the domain, not your web designer. It is a five minute check and it prevents a genuinely miserable situation later.
