Network, Wi-Fi and installs
Why doesn't my Wi-Fi cover the whole office?
Short answerAlmost always one access point trying to do the job of three, or the wrong kind of equipment for a commercial space.
The single router that came from your internet provider is designed for a house. A commercial space has more square footage, thicker walls, more devices competing, and neighbors whose networks are bleeding into yours.
Two things to check before you call:
- Where is the equipment physically? In a closet, behind a metal door, under a desk, or in a corner of the building means you are broadcasting through the worst possible path. Central and high is the rule.
- Is it one device or several? If somebody added a second router or a range extender to reach the back, that usually makes things worse. Extenders halve throughput and create a second network that devices cling to long after they should have switched.
The real fix is usually two or three business access points, wired back to the switch, with coverage designed to overlap. That is a half day of work and it solves a problem people have lived with for years.
If your building has concrete, brick, metal racking, or lead lined rooms, say so when you call. It changes the design substantially.
